Medical Science Liaison (MSL)

Location:        Pittsburgh, PA based with extensive travel



  • Applies advanced, field-based, scientific and medical experience, subject matter knowledge, and skills in supporting medical affairs and technical product strategies for Helomics Corporation.

  • Maximizes and leverages thought leader relationships by identifying mutually beneficial opportunities that meet the strategic needs of internal stakeholders.

  • Participates in and contributes to projects and initiatives that increase the value and productivity of Medical Affairs and supports the deployment of clinical data.


The candidate for this position will be responsible for facilitating and developing relationships with the medical/scientific community by communicating product-related and clinical information to potential partner clients in the pharmaceutical and diagnostic industries, physicians, institutions, cooperative groups, consortia, managed care organizations, P&T committees, Medical Policy and Tech Assessment Committees and other venues.  Position will provide information on research developments and new concepts in medical treatment/management, while providing perspective to medical/scientific field activities associated with growing existing products and services, as well as products and services that are in the process of being brought to market.    


Travel is a requirement for this position.


  • Identifies, establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with key industry scientists, physicians, institutions, groups and consortia strategic to the effective use of company products and services.

  • Participates in medical education for scientific and healthcare professionals, including Medical Policy & Technology Assessment Committees, formulary (P&T) committees, and Oncology Section Meetings through presentations at appropriate venues.

  • Actively participates in executing Helomics sales and marketing strategies at medical and scientific conferences by identifying presenting relevant sessions, coordinating coverage, and proactively facilitating thought leader interactions.

  • Facilitates the identification of medical community training and educational needs for product introduction.

  • Works with the appropriate internal and external departments to ensure required education and training are provided.

  • Increases company visibility with current and future industry leaders.

  • Enhances professional interaction between Helomics and industry leaders.

  • Identifies and communicates key clinical and research issues from industry leaders to appropriate departments to help shape company research, development, marketing plans and strategies.

  • Maintains clinical expertise through aggressive education, including attendance at relevant conferences, scientific workshops and review of key journals.

  • Gathers and disseminates competitive intelligence from multiple sources.

  • Takes advantage of opportunities to mentor other MSL team members, and participates in cross-functional Medical Affairs teams.

  • Is able to assist with administrative aspects of regional field activities.

  • Substantively contributes to scientific publication planning, slide-deck development, training initiatives and the development of a Medical Strategy Plan.

  • Assists the organization toward providing response to unsolicited requests for information with his/her direct collaboration with Medical Information Services personnel.

  • Completes accurate and timely administrative reports, project plans, and required documentation requests.

  • Other duties as may be required.


Minimum Requirements:

  • An advanced degree (M.D., Ph.D. or Pharm.D.) is preferred with prior experience in the biotech/pharmaceutical or healthcare environment is required (direct oncology experience is highly preferred)

  • Master’s degree accepted with more relevant experience

  • Ability to travel up to 60% of the time: As this is a customer-facing position, and the geographic territory expected to be covered is large, the candidate's availability for frequent travel is of paramount importance for professional and programmatic success.

  • A minimum of 5 years oncology/diagnostic/laboratory experience is required. Healthcare or related experience (managed markets, clinical practice, research or academic) following award of doctoral degree including a minimum of 2 years of experience within the diagnostic and/or biologic industry is desired.

  • Experience establishing and/or developing the MSL function within a growing organization is highly desired, including establishing foundational process and structure, SOP’s, compliance, etc.

  • Ability to collaborate and work closely with both field-based and internal product specialists

  • Knowledge of treatment guidelines (NCCN, ASCO, ASH, ESMO, BCBS TEC, etc.), clinical research processes, FDA regulations, CMS reimbursement coverage process, and OIG guidelines

  • Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills are required.

  • Must have the ability to network and partner with important external customers, including medical/scientific thought leaders, academic institutions, large group practices, NCI Cooperative Group leadership and members, medical directors of Managed Care Orgs., medical groups, as well as Institutional & Corporate Laboratory Directors and Pharmacy Directors.

  • Must be highly articulate and self-confident during formal and informal presentations; able to convey complex, scientific ideas fluently to any audience.

  • Must possess demonstrable effective leadership skills (by example and through accomplishments), and is able to step forward to handle challenges within scope of authority.

  • Must demonstrate deep therapeutic/scientific competency; stays abreast of trends and new information in the therapeutic/translational science area, as well as the profession at large.

  • Possesses superior communication skills, both oral and written, and able to engender trust and respect of peers, subordinates and superiors.

  • Well-versed in highly technical and scientific languages in order to communicate with key Thought Leaders, Medical Affairs, Research and Development, as well as other key internal and external stakeholders.

  • Firm understanding of the key phases, processes, and techniques that are involved in both the pre-clinical and clinical aspects of diagnostic development.

  • Proven track record of teamwork, leadership, timely decision making and results orientation in meeting objectives.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Proficiency with Webex, GoToMeeting, etc.
