IHC Technologist II

DEPARTMENT: BioSpeciFx

The Opportunity:

Helomics is an Integrated Clinical Contract Research Organization located in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA. Helomics mission is to improve the standard of care for cancer patients through innovative research and development partnerships with pharmaceutical, diagnostic, biotechnology, and academic organizations, leading to better and more personalized treatments and diagnostic technologies for human disease. Helomics’ CLIA-certified lab provides clinical testing that assists oncologists and surgeons in individualizing patient treatment decisions.

 

Position Scope and Focus:

As an IHC Technologist II in a high complexity laboratory, an individual is expected to participate in the day-to-day operational activities of the Helomics IHC laboratory.  This includes performance of standard histological tasks, including grossing, embedding, microtomy and staining procedures. 

 

The technologist will also be expected to interface cross-departmentally with the Clinical Information Management and Client Services groups to ensure the execution of the correct testing for all patients.  Additionally, an IHC Technologist II will be expected to participate in laboratory improvement activities and development projects. The individual will be expected to cross train in the cell culture and molecular assays once competency in IHC has been demonstrated.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Successful execution of aspects of the BioSpeciFx clinical assay process, including, but not limited to:

    • Accessioning

    • Grossing

    • Embedding

    • Microtomy

    • Staining

  • Maintenance and monitoring of laboratory equipment

  • Data entry in the laboratory LIS

  • Ensuring fidelity and long-term storage of patient blocks and slides

  • Proper cataloging and storage of all patient case-related paperwork and documentation

  • Identification and documentation of laboratory non-conformances

  • Cross-departmental interfacing with Clinical Information Management and Client Services groups to ensure the correct test execution for each patient

  • Assistance with development and improvement activities as requested by laboratory supervisor

  • Participate in a weekend rotation and off-hours work as directed by the laboratory supervisor

  • Regularly assist lab leadership in troubleshooting any laboratory issues

  • Provide recommendations for process and assay improvement

  • Other duties as assigned

 

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Education

    • A Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Molecular Biology or a related discipline is required

  

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience:   

    • 2+ years in a FDA, CAP, or CLIA approved histology laboratory

 

  • Certifications

    • ASCP categorical certification (HT or HTL)

  

Required Skills:        

  • Ability to execute laboratory procedures using appropriate histological technique

  • Understanding of quality control, as applied in a clinical laboratory

  • Able to complete work on-time, or ahead of schedule

  • Operate as a problem-solver who makes sound decisions

  • Maintain an organized workspace

  • Complete detail oriented tasks with precision

  • Effective communication skills, both in-person (verbal) and written (documentation)

  • Comfortable with the Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Word and Excel

  • Strong interpersonal skills

 

Desired Skills:           

  • Experience with laboratory LIS interfaces

  • Understanding of regulatory and compliance topics

  • Understanding of and experience with microtomy and IHC staining procedures
