Medical Laboratory Technologist with Experience in Cell Culture

DEPARTMENT: Clinical Laboratory
REPORTS TO: VP Operations/Medical Director      

The Opportunity:

Helomics is an Integrated Clinical Contract Research Organization located in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA. Helomics mission is to improve the standard of care for cancer patients through innovative research and development partnerships with pharmaceutical, diagnostic, biotechnology, and academic organizations, leading to better and more personalized treatments and diagnostic technologies for human disease. Helomics’ CLIA-certified lab provides clinical testing that assists oncologists and surgeons in individualizing patient treatment decisions. 


Position Scope and Focus:

This position will contribute to tissue culture related activities involved with delivering high quality cells for use in assay development, High Throughput Screening, compound profiling, technology evaluations, and other objective requiring delivery and maintenance of live cell cultures and/or frozen cell banks.  These activities will be in addition to the other standard aspects of clinical lab testing.


As a Laboratory Technologist in a high complexity clinical laboratory, an individual is expected to participate in the day-to-day operational activities of the Helomics laboratory. This includes all aspects of:


  • Chemoresponse testing, including but not limited to, preparation of microtiter plates, anticancer agent treatment, fixing and staining, immunocytochemistry, processing of specimens, maintenance of primary cell cultures, and operating lab computers for data entry and analysis. This individual will be expected to work independently and participate in team-based projects in quality improvement and assay development.

  • Performance of a variety of tasks related to molecular biology, including but not limited to, microdissection, DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, NGS, and microarray processing.  Work with laboratory automation is required. 

  • Performance of standard histological tasks, including grossing, embedding, microtomy, and standard as well as automated immunohistochemistry staining procedures. 


The technologist is required to maintain and demonstrate cross-functional skills across all areas of the clinical lab.  The technologist will be expected to successfully interface cross-departmentally with the Clinical Information Management, Client Services and LIMS groups to ensure the execution of the correct testing for all patients.  These interactions will require a thorough knowledge of laboratory/scientific techniques and regulatory requirements including accreditation and governmental regulations.  Additionally, the Laboratory Technologist will be expected to participate in process improvement through project management, as well as assist with validation and development projects, when necessary.


Duties & Responsibilities: (Not limited to…/other duties may be assigned)

  • Successful execution of all aspects of the clinical assay process:

    • Accessioning, Processing, Cell Culture, Immunocytochemistry, Data Entry

    • Microdissection, RNA/DNA extraction, qPCR, microarray workflow, Quality Control, NGS

    • Accessioning, Grossing, Embedding, Microtomy, Staining

  • Maintain proficiency and competency in all areas of the lab

  • Maintenance and monitoring of laboratory equipment

  • Data entry in the laboratory LIS

  • Identification and documentation of laboratory non-conformances

  • Assistance with development and improvement activities

  • Participate in project management initiatives through utilization of the IIP process

  • Write and improve laboratory SOPs

  • Able to make detailed observations, analyze data, and interpret results


Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Bachelor of Science degree with a major in a biological or related science AND

      • 1+ years of pertinent laboratory experience


  • MS or PhD with a major in a biological or related science AND

    • 1+ years of pertinent laboratory experience


Desired Qualifications:

  • Certification:

    • ASCP certification (MT, MB, and/or CT)

    • ASCP certification (HT or HTL)



  • Experience in a FDA, CAP, CLIA approved clinical laboratory

  • Data collection, analysis, and CQI methods with experience in QA/QC as pertains to clinical laboratories

  • Regulatory and Corporate Compliance

  • Direct participation in CLIA, NYSDOH, or CAP audits

  • Ability to serve as technical supervisor per CLIA and NYSDOH definitions


Required Technical/General Skills:           

  • Knowledge of next Generation Sequencing (NGS)/PCR/Microarrays/IHC

  • Maintain proficiency and competency in all areas of the lab

  • Experience with laboratory automation

  • Specialized knowledge or background in one or more molecular techniques

  • Comfortable with the Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Word and Excel
