Molecular Technologist II

DEPARTMENT: Laboratory Operations - GeneFx

The Opportunity:

Helomics is an Integrated Clinical Contract Research Organization located in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA. Helomics mission is to improve the standard of care for cancer patients through innovative research and development partnerships with pharmaceutical, diagnostic, biotechnology, and academic organizations, leading to better and more personalized treatments and diagnostic technologies for human disease. Helomics’ CLIA-certified lab provides clinical testing that assists oncologists and surgeons in individualizing patient treatment decisions. 

 

Position Scope and Focus:

As a Molecular Technologist II in a high complexity laboratory, an individual is expected to participate in the day-to-day operational activities of the Helomics molecular laboratory.  This includes performance of a variety of tasks related to molecular biology, including but not limited to, microdissection, DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, and Affymetrix processing.  Additionally, work with laboratory automation is required. 

 

The technologist is required to maintain and demonstrate cross-functional skills across all areas of the clinical lab.  The technologist will be expected to successfully interface cross-departmentally with the Clinical Information Management and Client Services groups to ensure the execution of the correct testing for all patients.  Additionally, a Molecular Technologist II will be expected to participate in process improvement through project management, as well as assist with validation and development projects, when necessary.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Successful execution of aspects of the molecular laboratory clinical assay processes, including, but not limited to:

    • Microdissection

    • RNA extraction (variable techniques)

    • DNA extraction

    • qPCR

    • Affymetrix workflow

    • All quality control, including nucleic acid quantification and qualification

  • Maintain proficiency and competency in this area and other areas of the lab

  • Maintenance and monitoring of laboratory equipment

  • Data entry in the laboratory LIS

  • Ensuring fidelity and long-term storage of patient material

  • Proper cataloging and storage of all patient case-related paperwork and documentation

  • Identification and documentation of laboratory non-conformances

  • Cross-departmental interfacing with Clinical Information Management and Client Services groups to ensure the correct test execution for each patient

  • Provide recommendations for process and assay improvement

  • Participate in project management initiatives through utilization of the IIP process

  • Understand the scientific and theoretical basis of laboratory procedures to be able to identify processes, results, or outcomes that are inappropriate

  • Participate in a weekend rotation and off-hours work as directed by the laboratory supervisor

  • Other duties as assigned

 

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Education

    • A Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Molecular Biology or a related discipline is required

 

  • Experience:   

    • 4+ years in a FDA, CAP, or CLIA approved laboratory

 

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Certifications

    • ASCP categorical certification (MB)

 

 

Required Skills:        

  • Ability to execute laboratory procedures using appropriate technique

  • Understanding of quality control, as applied in a clinical laboratory

  • Able to complete work on-time, or ahead of schedule

  • Operate as a problem-solver who makes sound decisions

  • Maintain an organized workspace

  • Complete detail oriented tasks with precision

  • Effective communication skills, both in-person (verbal) and written (documentation)

  • Comfortable with the Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Word and Excel

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Experience with laboratory LIS interfaces

  • Understanding of regulatory and compliance topics

 

Desired Skills:           

  • Specialized knowledge or background in one or more molecular techniques

  • Experience with laboratory automation
